NCI Awards $120 Million Research Grant on Steroids to SWOG at Universtiy of Michigan
The NCI (National Cancer Institute) just awarded a "cancer research grant on steroids"—The University of Michigan Medical School received a $63 million grant to fund the Southwest Oncology Group, or SWOG, a clinical research cooperative group that designs and conducts large-scale trials of new cancer treatments and prevention methods.

The Group, headquartered at the University of Michigan, comprises a network of almost 5,000 affiliated researchers and more than 500 institutions, including 19 of the cancer centers designated by the NCI (National Cancer Institute) , extends throughout the U.S. with affiliates in several other countries as well.
This is the largest research grant the school has ever received. The M-U Medical School will administer the $63 million, which covers the next 6 years operating grants and is part of a larger $120 million funding package, with the remainder to be distributed among SWOG's member institutions.
Apparently this is not the only huge amount received by The University of Michigan. In 2009, UM received more than $366 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health. Overall, UM faculty brought in more than $435 million in research funding from all sources during 2009, what they say is an all time record.
