Yogurt May Change Cancer Treatment
We always have know yogurt was a healthy substance, but a recent study has found that it might be instrumental in changing the way cancer is treated.
Researchers at the Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) have found that harmless bacteria from probiotic yogurt (bifidobacteria) can travel naturally through the body and can grow inside tumors. This discovery could change the delivery method for chemotherapy drugs and lessen the negative effects that current cancer treatments have on healthy cells.
Doctors could genetically engineer yogurt's bacteria so that they produce anti-cancer agents specifically inside tumors. Chemotherapy drugs are administered currently through IV (intravenous) injections, and often side effects result when healthy cells surrounding the treated cells come into contact with the chemotherapy drugs, which are toxic.
Perhaps, when further study is made, researchers may find a way to not only administer cancer fighting drugs through yogurt, but deliver cancer-preventing substances like resveratrol or other antioxidants
